Presque Isle and Presque Isle Bay
One peninsula, three fisheries: the spring smallmouth run in the bay, perch on the piers, bass and panfish in the lagoons - Erie's home water, fished from shore, pier, and boat.

Current conditions
Ungauged water. No stream gauge exists for a bay - and none is needed. Conditions here are wind, waves, and water temperature, read from the NOAA/NWS Cleveland marine forecast for the Lake Erie nearshore waters off Erie, the Pennsylvania Lake Erie nearshore buoy (PALakeErieBuoy.com, Regional Science Consortium), NOAA Weather Radio at 162.400 MHz, and VHF channel 16.
| Window | Reading |
|---|---|
| Locked in - ice season | Bay and lagoons iced over, shore ice stacked on the lake beaches: this is the ice fishery (see the winter rows), not open water. Never trust early or late ice. |
| Blown out - bay only | Small Craft Advisory up, or a hard north/northwest blow: waves 3 ft and up on the lake side. The open shore is done; the sheltered bay and lagoons still fish. |
| Settled - the full park fishes | Light to moderate wind (under roughly 15 kt), waves 1-2 ft or less on the lake side, bay settled: shore, pier, lagoon, and boat programs are all on. |
| Building - fish the sheltered side | Wind building ahead of a front, waves 2-3 ft on the lake side: the bay and lagoons fish fine; the open lake shore is a dawn-only gamble and shrinking. |
| Gale - stay off the water | Gale conditions or waves 4 ft and up: the lake side is dangerous, the bay is rough, and the piers take spray. A tying, scouting, and coffee day. |
Read the lake, not a gauge: after a northwest blow the lake side runs chocolate near shore while the bay stays green; spring runoff stains the lagoons tea-colored for days. The productive seam all over this fishery is a color edge - the shipping-channel edge, the creek-plume lines, the bay's mud line after a blow.
The bay settles within about a day of calm; the lake shore needs longer after a fall blow. The lagoons clear slowest - stained spring water there is normal and the fish expect it.
How the windows were set: Honest bands for a lake fishery: there is no discharge to measure on a bay, so these five bands are keyed to the products that actually govern a Presque Isle day - the NWS marine forecast's wind and wave calls, Small Craft Advisory status, and ice cover. They are working angler bands stated in the forecast's own terms, not instrument ratings. Check the forecast AND the nearshore buoy before every trip; on the lake side, the buoy is the truth and the forecast is the plan.
Season playbook
Resolved from today's date — the current season is highlighted. On the live site this re-resolves in your browser.
Spring (Mar - May)
The water: The bay warms weeks before the lake. Smallmouth pour in from early April; the spawn peaks toward late May; perch school in the bay and channel.
Fish present: Smallmouth (prime), largemouth, perch, pike (lagoons), panfish.
How to fish it: The full Spring (Mar - May) tactics — flies, water, and timing — are in the complete guide.
Summer (Jun - Aug)
The water: The bay is warm and the smallmouth are gone to the main lake by late July. The park turns to its resident fisheries - and to swimmers on the beaches by day.
Fish present: Largemouth, panfish, catfish, perch (lake side) (offshore - Trenches guide).
How to fish it: The full Summer (Jun - Aug) tactics — flies, water, and timing — are in the complete guide.
Fall (Sep - Nov)This season
The water: Cooling water reloads the shore: steelhead stage on the lake side, perch school on the piers, a few smallmouth revisit the bay, and the park empties of everyone but anglers.
Fish present: Steelhead, perch (nights), largemouth, panfish.
How to fish it: Surf and pier steelhead at dawn; fall perch rails; lagoons until ice.
Winter (Dec - Feb)
The water: Ice season, when it comes: the bay freezes first and the lagoons with it. Steelhead and perch under the ice are the DCNR-noted winter fishery.
Fish present: Steelhead and perch through the ice; panfish in the lagoons.
How to fish it: The full Winter (Dec - Feb) tactics — flies, water, and timing — are in the complete guide.
On now — hatch & forage for November
- Emerald shiners — Live shiners on spreader rigs; shiner streamers and small spoons for casters
- Rainbow smelt — Smelt-profile streamers and small spoons
Full calendar
| Item | Window | Size | Patterns | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Emerald shiners | Year-round; peaks Apr - Jun and Sep - Nov | 2-3 in baitfish | Live shiners on spreader rigs; shiner streamers and small spoons for casters | The bay's base currency: perch eat them, bass hunt the schools, steelhead slash them in the surf. PFBC even sells a Lake Erie net permit for taking your own (200/day with the permit) - most anglers buy them at the marina shops instead. |
| Round gobies | Apr - Oct | 3-4 in bottom fish | Goby-colored tube jigs, Ned rigs, drop-shot goby imitations | The invasive that rebuilt Erie bass fishing: smallmouth key on gobies over every rock pile and channel edge in the bay. Goby patterns are the spring smallmouth standard. |
| Crayfish | May - Sep | #6-10 / 2-3 in | Crayfish plastics, small jigs, hair jigs | Bay rock and channel-edge smallmouth forage all summer; also the lagoons' largemouth staple. |
| Lake Erie mayfly hatch | Jun - Jul | 1 in emergers, spent spinners on the surface | Soft hackles, small jigs under a float, fly-rod mayfly imitations for panfish | The lake's famous June hatch slicks the bay with spent mayflies; panfish, perch, and bass feed on the surface film at dusk. A spectacle and a fishery at once. |
| Gizzard shad and alewives | May - Aug | 3-6 in baitfish | Shad-rap style cranks, soft jerkbaits, white streamers | Summer bait in the bay; post-spawn smallmouth in June feed heavily on shad and shiners before leaving for the lake. |
| Rainbow smelt | Mar - May and Oct - Dec | 5-7 in | Smelt-profile streamers and small spoons | Cold-water forage along the shore in the shoulder seasons; smelt themselves are open year-round with no creel limit in the PFBC table, and shore dipping is an old Erie spring rite. |
Weather & conditions playbook
The row matching the live flow band is highlighted when the gauge answers.
| Condition | What changes | Tactics | Flies | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Northwest blow (fall and spring) | The lake side stacks up and stains; the bay stays green and the lagoons barely notice. Temperatures drop behind the front. | Bay and lagoons all day; channel-edge smallmouth and perch. The lake shore resets for a day - fish it tomorrow at dawn. | Tubes and drop-shots (bay); hold the spoons a day. | Go - fish the sheltered side. |
| South / southwest warm wind | The spring pattern-maker: warm air pushes bay temperatures up and smallmouth climb the flats to feed and then to spawn. | Flats and marina water with tubes and wacky worms; evenings best. | Goby tubes, Ned rigs. | Go - the best spring bass weather there is. |
| Northeast wind in spring | Cold lake water floods the bay mouth; shallow fish back off to the channel edge and deeper breaks for a day or two. | Full tactics for this band are in the complete guide. | In the guide. | Go, but fish it like winter. |
| Calm, bright, high pressure (summer) | The park is a beach park by day: swimmers, boat wakes, and spooky fish in gin-clear shallows. | Full tactics for this band are in the complete guide. | In the guide. | Edges of the day. |
| Fall cold front, lake calm | Steelhead slide to the shore and stack off the channel; the tributaries may be blown while the lake is fishable. | Full tactics for this band are in the complete guide. | In the guide. | Go - this is the shore's prime fall state. |
| Thunderstorm line approaching | A peninsula is the highest thing around: lightning finds anglers on piers and points first, and the lake builds dangerously fast behind a squall line. | Full tactics for this band are in the complete guide. | In the guide. | No-go until it passes. |
| Ice forming / mid-winter thaw | Bay ice builds, rots, and rebuilds with every warm spell; shore ice on the lake side is never fishable. Wind moves bay ice sheets overnight. | Full tactics for this band are in the complete guide. | In the guide. | Earned caution - the winter fishery is real and so is the ice risk. |
