Daily mean flow for Wed Oct 14, 2026 — the latest full day in the guide’s gauge record. Checking the live USGS feed now…

Weather joins the verdict when the forecast feed answers — air temperature, wind and rain chance for the creek, and a lightning hold if storms are on it.

Verdict computed live from the flow band and the 24-hour trend — the same windows the full guide fishes by. It is a planning aid, not a promise: look at the water before you fish it.

Today On The Water

Quest of the day

One mission, computed for Saturday, October 17 from the flow band, the season and the solunar clock. On the live page it recomputes in your browser every day.

The creek is blown — the stillwater save
  • The creek needs a day or two. Deer Lakes Park lakes fishes right through a blowout.
  • Target: Deer Lakes Park trout (three lakes).
  • Be first back when the gauge falls into the prime window.

Log the result in your logbook below — that’s the receipt.

The Tool

Fish it — the species checker, bite clock & what-if lab

This is the part a search engine can’t hand you: the guide’s own data, computed against today’s water. Pick a fish and read its window, check the clock, then break the conditions in the lab before the creek does it for you.

Species turn-on checker

Every fish on this water, scored live from the flow band, the month, the water temperature and the trend. Tap one for its window and the fly that matches right now.

The Gauge

Current conditions

Proxy gauge: USGS 03049807 — Pine Creek at Grant Avenue at Etna. Deer Creek has no gauge of its own — every reading on this page is the Pine Creek proxy, labeled as such, and the creek itself has the last word at the SR 910 bridge.

Flow windows — where 226 cfs sits

Too lowPine Creek gauge under 20 cfs and Deer Creek gin clear at the SR 910 bridge - late-summer base flow, spooky fish
Low and fishablePine gauge 20 - 40 cfs: careful, technical fishing in the Gibsonia DHALO
PrimePine gauge 40 - 100 cfs and falling: Deer Creek is usually in shape within a day - confirm color at the bridge
High and fishablePine gauge 100 - 220 cfs: fish the DHALO edges, the Emmerling Park slow water, and inside bends only
Blown outPine gauge over 220 cfs, or Deer Creek chocolate at the SR 910 bridge - an ungauged creek has the last word

Deer Creek is UNGAUGED - verified against the USGS NWIS station inventory in October 2026 - all five inventory sites on the creek (Bairdford 03049645, Dorseyville 03049646, Little Deer Creek 03049648, Rt. 910 near Cheswick 03049649, Harmarville 03049650) return no discharge and no gage-height series, current or historic. Windows are therefore keyed to the nearest honest proxy - Pine Creek at Grant Avenue at Etna (USGS 03049807), the adjacent basin immediately west, whose gauge drainage (57.3 sq mi) closely matches Deer Creek's (about 51 sq mi at the Harmarville site, about 52 at the mouth). Bands are scaled slightly under Pine's own windows because Deer Creek runs a touch lower and flashier than Pine at the same reading. Derived working bands - always confirm color at the SR 910 bridge before fishing.

Color: Read it where you park: the SR 910 bridge near Cheswick for the lower creek, the wooden footbridge at Emmerling Community Park for the middle, and any DHALO bridge crossing up in Gibsonia. Deer runs tea-green when right and clears from the top down - the Gibsonia water is fishable a half day before the Harmar end after the same rain.
Clearing: Figure 24-48 hours after a moderate event - the headwaters above Gibsonia clear first; the lower creek below the Rt. 910 corridor drags a day longer after basin-wide soaks.

PFBC-scheduled fall stocking · Tuesday, Oct 20, 2026

Fall stocking — Tuesday, Oct 20, 2026 (PFBC schedule — dates can shift; check before you go)

Deer Creek Section 3 — rainbow trout into the Delayed Harvest water in Gibsonia (SR 910 at Martin Road down to the Rose Ridge Golf Course boundary — the upper creek, not Cheswick). All three Deer Lakes Park lakes (Lower, Middle, Upper) are stocked the same day. Walk in from Campbell Road — golf-course-lot parking is a thing of the past; do not park on the course. No meeting point is printed here on purpose — check the current PFBC schedule the week of the stocking.

Delayed Harvest Artificial Lures Only — the rules that matter

Artificials only — no bait or baitfish may be used or possessed in the section.
Open to fishing year-round — the DHALO never closes, including the March window when standard stocked sections shut.
Catch & release right now — trout may be kept only from June 15 to Labor Day (minimum 9″, creel limit 3).
License required — a valid PA fishing license and trout permit.

Access — interactive map & pins

Tap a numbered pin to jump to its access entry. Dashed pins are approximate reach anchors from published accounts — confirm posted signs on the ground.

Schematic map from GNIS, USGS and PFBC GIS anchors: the creek runs from the Bakerstown / Gibsonia headwaters (top) down through the Delayed Harvest section (points 1-3), Emmerling Community Park (point 4) and the Cheswick corridor to the Allegheny River at Harmar (point 6). The star marks the PROXY gauge on Pine Creek - Deer Creek itself has no gauge. Point 7 (Deer Lakes Park) sits on tributary lakes east of the main stem, deliberately plotted off the creek line. Not for navigation - confirm posted boundaries on the ground.

1

SR 910 bridge at Martin Road (T-678) - top of the Delayed Harvest section · Map pin

Parking: Bridge-area pull-offs near the SR 910 crossing at the top of the section, Gibsonia side; the winery on 910 is a local landmark for the upper stocking point. Park off the pavement - SR 910 is a busy road.

The Delayed Harvest Artificial Lures Only section starts at the SR 0910 bridge at the T-678 (Martin Road) intersection and runs 1.9 miles downstream. Artificials only from here down - check your vest before you cross the line.

The walk: A short bank walk from the bridge to the first DHALO pools; the section is best fished as a walk-down from here or a walk-up from Campbell Road.

The water: The top of the special water - first pools below the bridge hold fresh stockers in spring and again after the October stocking.

Best: Prime and low bands; stocking weeks in March, April and late October.

Pressure: Bridge pressure on stocking days, thinning fast downstream.

2

Campbell Road pull-off - the DHALO's working entrancePin approximate · Map pin

Parking: A small pull-off roughly a quarter mile in on Campbell Road, per published local access accounts - park well off the road; the lane is narrow and residential.

Local access accounts call Campbell Road the best way into the Delayed Harvest section - a main stocking point is the Campbell Road bridge, with the pull-off water below it. This is the mid-section door that splits the 1.9 miles into two fishable halves.

The walk: Short path from the pull-off to the creek; from the bridge you can work either direction - up to the SR 910 top or down toward the golf course boundary.

The water: The middle DHALO - riffle-and-pool stocked water with the section's best holdover reputation.

Best: Every band starts here for information; prime band for fishing.

Pressure: The section's known door - steady among locals, quiet midweek.

Pin source: Approximate reach anchor - Campbell Road bridge corridor, placed from published access accounts (Dark Skies Fly Fishing) between the PFBC GIS section endpoints; confirm posted signs on the ground

3

Rose Ridge Golf Course lower boundary - bottom of the Delayed Harvest section · Map pin

Parking: No public lot here - older accounts of golf-course-lot parking describe a thing of the past. Reach this end by walking the creek corridor down from Campbell Road, and respect course property.

The Delayed Harvest section ends at the lower boundary of Rose Ridge Golf Course (4769 Gibsonia Road, Allison Park) - Deer Creek winds through the course's back nine. Below this line the creek returns to standard stocked-trout water. Know which side of the line you are standing on.

The walk: A creek-corridor walk down from Campbell Road; do not cut across the course.

The water: The deepest DHALO bends, against the golf course woods - home water for the section's holdovers.

Best: Prime and low bands; fall, when the browns color up.

Pressure: The quiet end of the special water - the walk filters the crowd.

4

Emmerling Community Park, Indiana Township (Section 4 corridor) · Map pin

Parking: The park's large lot at 152 Cove Run Road, Cheswick - about half a mile off Rt. 910, across from the township building. PFBC stocking trucks meet volunteers here for the creek's sections.

A 59-acre township park whose trails follow Deer Creek, with a wooden footbridge over the water. This is the middle creek's public front door and the color-check spot for the lower water. Park hours sunrise to dusk; portions of the park close mid-June through the end of July, Monday-Friday 8:00 AM - 1:30 PM, for the summer camp program. The adjacent 266-acre Deer Creek Conservation Project (Allegheny Land Trust to PA Game Commission, 2025) extends the greenway around the park toward a 325-acre whole.

The walk: Paved lot to creek-side trails in minutes; the footbridge crossing is the mid-creek vantage for reading color and flow.

The water: Standard stocked-trout water (Section 4 corridor) - wider and slower than the Gibsonia special water, warming earlier in summer.

Best: Spring stocking season and after fall cool-downs; summer evenings for the park's shade.

Pressure: A family park first - anglers share it gladly and mostly have the creek to themselves.

SR 910 bridge near Cheswick - the lower creek color check · Map pin

Parking: Bridge crossings on the lower creek along the Rt. 910 corridor above Harmar; park off the pavement and stay clear of the roadway.

The USGS keeps an inventory pin here (drainage 49.1 sq mi) but has never published flow from it - the bridge itself is your gauge - this is where you read color and height for the whole lower creek before committing to the mouth or driving up to the DHALO.

The walk: Bridge vantage only for the check; fish the lower corridor from the park and township access above and the mouth below.

The water: The lower stocked creek running down to Harmar - the first water to color and the last to clear.

Best: Stocked season; a 60-second stop here saves a wasted trip anywhere on this ungauged creek.

Pressure: Light - most anglers fish the special water or the park.

Pin source: USGS NWIS site record, 03049649 Deer Creek at Rt. 910 near Cheswick (inventory site - no gauge)

6

The mouth at Harmar - where the creek becomes the river · Map pin

Parking: Harmar Township riverfront area near the creek mouth on the Allegheny (Pool 2); Allegheny Islands State Park sits in the river nearby.

Deer Creek joins the Allegheny River at Harmar Township (mouth elevation 725 ft). The fishing here is river fishing - Outdoor News' Southwest PA reports put walleye at the creek mouth before the season closure, smallmouth and rock bass along the confluence, and a 43-inch muskie from a nearby back channel. River regulations, river tackle, river caution.

The walk: Bank access around the confluence; watch river-edge drop-offs and current seams.

The water: The confluence seam - creek flow meeting Pool 2, concentrating bait and everything that eats it.

Best: Late winter into spring for the walleye window; summer for smallmouth at the seam.

Pressure: River anglers, not trout anglers - a different crowd and a different tackle box.

Deer Lakes Park lakes (watershed annex - NOT on the main stem) · Map pin

Parking: County park lots in Deer Lakes County Park, off Mahaffey Road in the West Deer / Frazer area.

Lower, Middle and Upper (West) Deer Lakes are PFBC stocked trout waters - three small lakes in the Deer Creek watershed on tributary water. They are NOT on Deer Creek itself, and Middle Deer Lake's lot doubles as a fall meeting place for the creek's stocking trucks. Listed here, clearly labeled, because every local asks.

The walk: County park lots and lake paths - the easiest family fishing in the watershed.

The water: Small stocked trout lakes - spring and fall plantings, ice-season interest in hard winters.

Best: Stocking weeks, spring and fall.

Pressure: Family-lake pressure on stocking weekends; quiet midweek.

    The Year

    Season playbook

Resolved from today's date — the current season is highlighted. On the live site this re-resolves in your browser.

    Spring (Mar - May)

The water: Stocked and rising; the DHALO was stocked March 3 and April 14 (2026 schedule); standard sections open the first Saturday of April.

Fish present: Fresh stockers - browns, rainbows and goldens in the DHALO - plus holdovers.

How to fish it: Nymph the DHALO by day, dry-fly the evening rises; opening-week crowds belong to the standard sections and Deer Lakes.

    Summer (Jun - Aug)

The water: The creek warms early below Gibsonia; the DHALO harvest window (June 15 - Labor Day) is the only time trout may be kept there. Emmerling Park runs its summer camp closures on weekday middays.

Fish present: Holdovers in the shaded DHALO pools; river smallmouth at the mouth.

How to fish it: Dawn trout in the Gibsonia shade, thermometer in hand; evenings at the Harmar confluence.

    Fall (Sep - Nov)This season

The water: The PFBC-scheduled October 20 fall stocking (rainbows — dates can shift; check the current PFBC schedule before you go) refreshes the DHALO; low, clear, technical water elsewhere.

Fish present: Browns coloring up; fresh fall rainbows in the special water.

How to fish it: Streamers on the drop; October caddis at dusk; BWO on grey days.

    Winter (Dec - Feb)

The water: Cold and clear; the DHALO is the open water - standard sections run on the extended season until late February.

    Fish present: Holdover trout.

How to fish it: Midges and small stonefly nymphs, midday, slow - and the mouth's walleye window builds toward the March season closure.

    Rig By The Water

    Technique by flow band

The rig, where the fish hold, and the safety note for every band — straight from the guide.

    Too low

Pine Creek gauge under 20 cfs and Deer Creek gin clear at the SR 910 bridge - late-summer base flow, spooky fish

Rig: Spring-creek mode: 12-14 ft leaders to 6X, one small nymph or midge, no indicator splash in the Gibsonia slots (proxy under 20).

Where they hold: The deepest DHALO pools, especially the golf-course bends. At summer lows this band is also a temperature warning - check before you fish trout.

Safety: Low water exposes slick slab rock and the golf-course banks are private - stay in the creek corridor.

    Low and fishable

Pine gauge 20 - 40 cfs: careful, technical fishing in the Gibsonia DHALO

Rig: Careful, technical fishing: small nymphs in the pool slots, emergers on any rise, 5X-6X throughout (proxy 20-40).

Where they hold: Pool tails, shade lines, and the flat water below Campbell Road for risers.

Safety: The DHALO is artificials only - check your vest for the bait-era habits before you cross the SR 910 line.

    Prime

Pine gauge 40 - 100 cfs and falling: Deer Creek is usually in shape within a day - confirm color at the bridge

Rig: The full menu: nymph the slots, emergers at the flats, small streamers in the undercuts - and stay for the evening rise (proxy 40-100, falling, color confirmed at the bridge).

Where they hold: Everywhere in the section; holdovers prowl the edges at dusk.

Safety: Prime flows make the creek's crossings pushy. Cross at tail-outs, and never above a drop.

    High and fishable

Pine gauge 100 - 220 cfs: fish the DHALO edges, the Emmerling Park slow water, and inside bends only

Rig: Edges only (proxy 100-220): streamers in the colored edges, heavy nymphs in the soft seams; the Emmerling Park slow water and inside bends.

Where they hold: The slowest water in the creek - inside bends, eddy edges, the park's flat pools.

Safety: On an ungauged creek, high is a judgement call you make standing at the bridge. If it looks wrong, it is wrong.

    Blown out

Pine gauge over 220 cfs, or Deer Creek chocolate at the SR 910 bridge - an ungauged creek has the last word

Rig: Proxy over 220 or chocolate at the SR 910 bridge: the creek is closed. Deer Lakes or Pine Creek (gauged, and an honest drive west) are the trip.

Where they hold: The lakes' coves; the diner in Cheswick.

Safety: Ungauged creeks demand visual honesty: if it looks blown at the bridge, it is blown. Come back in 24-48 hours.

High and off-colorAn ungauged creek gives no warning but its own look - chocolate at the SR 910 bridge means the lower creek is done, though the Gibsonia top may clear a half day sooner.Check the top of the creek first; if the DHALO is green while the bottom is brown, fish high in the watershed or wait a day.First-drop streamers for DHALO browns.Read the creek, not the phone.
Prime green and falling (proxy 40-100)Stained green, hatches still come off, holdovers prowl the Gibsonia pools.Nymph the slots, streamer the undercuts, stay for the evening rise.Caddis pupa, Pheasant Tails, small streamers.Go.
Low and clear (proxy 20-40)Spring-creek mode in the DHALO: visible, educated fish.Long leaders, 6X, small nymphs and emergers; one rise, one cast.BWO, midges, RS2s.Technical but excellent.
Cold snapDHALO pools go still and clear; midges only.Midday, deep, slow.Zebra midges, small stones.Short sessions.
Warm rainA spring warm rain triggers the season's best streamer day on the drop - and on an ungauged creek the drop is something you watch happen at the bridge.Big flies in the colored edges as it falls.Woolly Buggers, small articulated streamers.Go - on the drop.
Summer heat (water over 68 F)Trout stress fast; the lower and middle creek warm first and worst.Take the temperature; if it is over 68 F at midday, stop fishing trout - the mouth's smallmouth and the lakes are the honest summer fisheries.-Switch species or stay home.
    Put It Together

    Tactics & flies

    Core tactics

    • The Gibsonia DHALO fishes like a spring creek in freestone clothing: drag-free drifts, 5X-6X tippets in clear water, and nymphs (Pheasant Tail, Hare's Ear, zebra midges) through the pool slots below Campbell Road.
    • No gauge means a two-step check - Pine Creek's gauge (03049807) for timing at home, then your own eyes at the SR 910 bridge or the Emmerling footbridge for color. Skip the second step and the creek will eventually make you regret it.
    • Stocked fish in the standard sections eat like stocked fish - egg patterns, squirmy worms and bright nymphs in the first two weeks after a planting, then the naturals take over.
    • Evenings April into June are the creek's dry-fly hours - BWO and sulphur activity concentrates on the DHALO flat pools at dusk.
    • Summer splits the guide in two - dawn holdovers in the shaded Gibsonia water, or the river at the mouth for smallmouth. The middle creek in July belongs to the park's picnickers.

    What to throw, by season

    SeasonWhat to throw
Spring (Mar - May)BWO 16-20, Grannom caddis 14-16, Hendrickson 12-14 (mid-April), Pheasant Tail, Hare's Ear, caddis pupa. Egg patterns and squirmy worms for fresh stockers in the standard sections; artificials only in the DHALO. Watch for the golden rainbows Section 3 is stocked with.
Summer (Jun - Aug)Sulphurs early summer evenings (16-18), Light Cahill, terrestrials - foam ants and beetles along the Gibsonia shade lines; Clousers and crayfish patterns for the mouth's smallmouth.
Fall (Sep - Nov)October caddis 10-12, BWO again, Slate Drake nymphs, small streamers for browns; egg patterns for the October DHALO rainbow stocking (tied egg flies are legal artificials there).
Winter (Dec - Feb)Zebra midges 20-24, little black stonefly nymphs, slow deep drifts in the DHALO pools - open year-round while most stocked water sleeps.
    Who's Home

    Fish & seasons

Brown, rainbow and golden rainbow trout (stocked, Section 3 = the Delayed Harvest water)

Season: Spring, in-season and fall stockings; the section is open to fishing year-round

PFBC's stocking record for Deer Creek Section 3 lists brown, rainbow and golden trout from the Pleasant Gap hatchery - stocked March 3 and April 14, 2026, with a fall stocking of rainbows scheduled for October 20, 2026 (PFBC schedule — dates can shift; check before you go). Holdovers are real here - local accounts report fish to 24 inches in the special water.

Brook, brown and rainbow trout (stocked, lower sections incl. Section 4)

    Season: Standard PA stocked-trout seasons

The lower stocked sections (Section 4 fishes the Emmerling Park and Cheswick corridor) are stocked in spring; the stocking trucks meet volunteers at Emmerling Community Park.

Warmwater at the mouth - walleye, smallmouth bass, rock bass (Allegheny River fish)

Season: River seasons apply - this is river water at the confluence, not creek water

Outdoor News' Southwest PA fishing reports document walleye at the mouth of Deer Creek before the season closure, plus smallmouth and rock bass, and a 43-inch muskie from a nearby river back channel. Those are Allegheny River (Pool 2) fish using the creek mouth - fish them under river regulations.

Deer Lakes Park trout (three stocked lakes in the watershed)

Season: PFBC lake stocking schedule, spring and fall

Lower, Middle and Upper (West) Deer Lakes in Deer Lakes County Park are PFBC stocked trout waters - but they sit on tributary water in the watershed, NOT on the Deer Creek main stem. A separate stillwater fishery, listed here so nobody drives to the wrong water.

    Your First Trip

First trip — fish it like a local

Start with the proxy: check Pine Creek's gauge (USGS 03049807) at home - 40 to 100 cfs and falling is the prime signal. Then drive SR 910 and LOOK at Deer Creek from the bridge near Cheswick. Tea-green - go. Chocolate - the lakes, or Pine Creek itself.

    1. Park at the Campbell Road pull-off in Gibsonia - the working entrance to the Delayed Harvest section (artificials only, SR 910 bridge down to the Rose Ridge Golf Course lower boundary).
    2. Fish the riffle-and-pool water below the Campbell Road bridge by day - nymphs in the slots, emergers on any rise.
    3. Work up toward the SR 910 top or down toward the golf-course bends; the deepest bends at the bottom of the section hold the holdovers.
    4. If it is May or June, be back on the flat pools below Campbell Road for the last two hours - sulphur time.
    5. Note the boundaries: above SR 910 and below the golf-course line the rules change back to standard stocked-trout regulations, and the section's harvest window (June 15 - Labor Day) is the only time trout come home from the DHALO.
In the DHALO, move pool to pool, not cast to cast. Ten good drifts in a slot, then step. At dusk, stop moving entirely and own one flat pool.

Etiquette: The DHALO lives between a golf course and people's backyards. Stay in the creek corridor, park well off Campbell Road, and pack out line. Artificials only in the section - no bait, no exceptions.

    The Water

    About Deer Creek

Deer Creek is the Allegheny County stocked creek most anglers drive past. PA DEP listings carry about 10.5 miles of main stem (Cold Water Fishes designated use), rising near Bakerstown and Gibsonia and running south through Indiana Township to its mouth on the Allegheny at Harmar - roughly 52 square miles of watershed, drained by tributaries like Little Deer Creek, Long Run and Rawlins Run. Its modern identity was made in two pieces. Up top, PFBC carved out 1.9 miles of Delayed Harvest Artificial Lures Only water from the SR 910 bridge at Martin Road down past the Campbell Road bridge to the lower boundary of Rose Ridge Golf Course - artificials only, a June-to-Labor-Day harvest window, and spring, in-season and fall stockings (browns, rainbows and goldens from Pleasant Gap) that turned a suburban creek into a holdover fishery with a local reputation for outsized browns. Down below, the middle creek runs through Indiana Township's 59-acre Emmerling Community Park - the stocking trucks' meeting place, with trails and a wooden footbridge on the water - and the greenway around it grew by 266 acres in 2025 when the Deer Creek Conservation Project moved from the Allegheny Land Trust to the Game Commission. The creek carries a coal-country past - DEP's impaired-waters listings have flagged segments for abandoned-mine-drainage metals over the years, which the watershed groups keep chipping at. And it is, completely, ungauged - the USGS keeps five inventory pins on it and publishes flow from none of them, which is why this guide borrows Pine Creek's gauge one basin west and tells you to confirm everything with your own eyes at the SR 910 bridge.

    Stay Legal

    Regulations

    • Delayed Harvest Artificial Lures Only: 1.9 miles, from the SR 0910 Bridge at the T-678 intersection downstream to the lower boundary of Rose Ridge Golf Course (PFBC Summary Book, Southwest Region). Artificial lures only - no bait or baitfish may be used or possessed in the section. Open to fishing year-round; trout may be kept only from June 15 to Labor Day (minimum 9 inches, creel limit 3); catch and release at all other times.
    • The rest of Deer Creek is a PFBC Stocked Trout Water under standard stocked-trout seasons - closed to fishing March 1 to opening day, regular season creel 5 (7 inches minimum), extended season creel 3. The Delayed Harvest section stays open through the March window.
    • A valid PA fishing license and trout permit are required on the creek; the Combination Trout/Lake Erie permit also covers this water.
    • At the mouth you are on the Allegheny River: river seasons, sizes and creel limits apply there, not creek rules - and walleye season closes in mid-March, which is exactly when the mouth fishes best. Check the river tables before you keep anything.
    • Respect the corridor: the DHALO runs past a golf course and homes - stay in the creek corridor, never cut across the course, park off the pavement on Campbell Road, and pack out line. Emmerling Park is sunrise to dusk with posted summer-camp closures.
    • Summaries for planning only: check current PFBC rules for the exact water and date you fish.
