What AI can't give you
Time on the water. No AI can feel the push of current on your legs, read the light on a run, or know the minute a creek turns on. That's earned standing in the water, season after season. What this guide gives you is the data — live flows, real gauges, verified access, honest conditions — so your time out there counts. Nothing beats time on the water.
THE CREEK ON ONE PAGERead it in 60 seconds
The prime window
Long pools full of moving fish. Bands above resolve live from USGS 04213000 — the gauge is on this river, in the lower reach; still confirm color, because Conneaut goes brown, not grey-green.
The color story — silt, not shale
More silt and sand than the shale creeks, so Conneaut goes brown instead of grey-green and stays off-color longer: PFBC classes it Large — 2–4 days to fishable after a rain event. Fish it on color, not just numbers.
The fish, by season
Steelhead (lake-run rainbow)
Stocked by Ohio in the lower river; PA water gets lake-run fish throughout. No stacking dams - fish spread the whole system.
Stocked trout (upper Crawford County water)
Upper Conneaut Creek is a PFBC stocked trout water - a different fishery above the steelhead reach; check current PFBC rules by section.
Smallmouth bass, muskellunge (lower river)
The deep, silty lower river fishes like a small warmwater river in summer.
No stacking dams — fish spread the whole system instead of piling at one barrier.

RULES & THE ACCESS STORYFish legal, fish welcome
- TWO jurisdictions: Pennsylvania water needs a PA license plus Lake Erie permit; Ohio water (below the state line, including the harbor) needs an Ohio license and follows Ohio rules, including Ohio's single-hook and snagging rules - verify both before fishing.
- Steelhead minimum size and creel differ by state and date - check current PFBC and Ohio DNR rules.
- Upper Crawford County water is PFBC stocked trout water with its own seasons - check the current PFBC summary book by section.
- Summaries for planning only: check current PFBC / Ohio DNR rules for the exact water and date you fish.
Conneaut is the shore's state-line river: roughly 175 square miles of watershed at the gauge, with its lower river and harbor in Ohio and some 30 miles of Pennsylvania steelhead water above. Ohio stocks the lower river's steelhead; Pennsylvania water gets lake-run fish throughout, and because there are no stacking dams, the fish spread the whole system instead of piling at one barrier - the reason this big river fishes emptier than Walnut at half its size. Its other identity is time: PFBC classes it Large (2-4 days to fishable after rain), the slowest clock on the west shore, but its rocky bottom clears faster than its size suggests once it starts dropping - and when Conneaut is green, it stays green and fishable longer than any other trib. The upper Crawford County water above the steelhead reach is a separate PFBC stocked-trout fishery with its own seasons.
